We do not have enough space to show all of the animals that we have rescued and some are too horrendous to put on our website, so here are just a few to show you where your money goes.
REMEMBER IGNORANCE CAN CAUSE AS MUCH SUFFERING AS NEGLECT
Lilly
Lilly was found in January 2007. She was emaciated and had a smashed left front shoulder.
On top of this she was also pregnant. The puppies were too big for her to give birth to so
she had to have a cesarian. Her shoulder then had to be operated on and she had a metal
rod
on the outside of her shoulder to put all the bits back in place. Lilly was a devoted
mum
and put all her energy into looking after her puppies,
this meant that she did not put on
any weight herself and her shoulder had still not healed
after 3 months. All Lilly's puppies were re-homed in the Channel Islands and Lilly has settled very well into her new home in Jersey.
Tortoises
These tortoises have deformed shells, which was caused by a poor diet. We have taken on the tortoises and they are now receiving the correct, balanced diet they require. Unfortunately due to the bad diet they were on they will die young, the most we can do for them is make the remaining time they have left as comfortable as possible. Both have now made friends at the sanctuary and are leading happy lives.
Rabbits
Rabbits left in cages on their own with no exercise suffer from muscle wastage,
which
in turn makes their joints weak and often painful. They can also become insecure
when
being picked up. All of these things can lead to the rabbit kicking out, biting
and
scratching. When this happens many people just leave the rabbit alone and
eventually bring
them into us . These rabbits are often too difficult to be handled
and therefore cannot be
re-homed.
Most of our welfare cases come from rabbits. They are
easy to get hold of and people don't
realise how much space and attention they need. Any
rabbits that cannot be re homed stay
with us and are intergrated into a group where
they will feel safe and happy.
Birds
We get a lot of parrots brought into us. Birds can be very very loud and make a lot of mess. They also need a lot of space and should not just be kept in a small cage for their entire life. Many people do not realise that birds can out live people. The bird on the left, Diesel, pulls out his feathers. This is because he was kept in a small cage with no room to fly around and no toys. Out of frustration and boredom he plucked out all his feathers. He was also on a very poor diet and was not receiving any of the nutrients that he needed. He has now made a full recovery and is a lot happier. He has space to fly around and has made lots of new companions.
We have many
birds brough to us
because their owners did not realise how loud or
messy they were going to be. When they
come to us we introduce them to others of their
kind and make sure they have room to fly
around and lots of toys to play with as well as
receiving the balanced diet that they
require.
